Live underwater cameras.

The second prototype camera was deployed just offshore at the Island Bay Marine Education Centre in the Taputeranga Marine Reserve, Wellington, New Zealand.

We are awaiting approval to deploy a version 2 camera system, with improved image quality, faster data rate, and most importantly, error correction of data errors that can occur during transmission from underwater. A single bit error is enough to corrupt a image when compressed image formats, like jpeg, are used.

The camera uses the Seachannelā„¢ communications tether developed by Oceansense Ltd, a New Zealand company based in Porirua, on Wellington’s west coast.

Here areĀ some of example pictures taken with the automatic camera in the Taputeranga Marine Reserve.
